Healthy Dinner Options
Grab And Go Snacks
- Raw vegetables such as carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, cucumber. These can be served with low fat dip if you like.
- Fresh fruit such as apples, pears, bananas, oranges, grapes. Whatever you like will be fine.
- Granola bars and protein bars. Energy bars are different and may just be filled with carbs so read the label.
- Nuts and seeds are great but read the label. Often seeds have been deep fried and that means greasy.
- Fig bars and other high fiber variants.
- Dried fruit such as raisins, apricots, dates, prunes and other assorted varieties that are popping up in grocery stores.
- Low fat string cheese.
- Whole grain crackers but read the label since some of these have little whole grain and lots of fat.
- Low fat yogurt.
Minimal Prep Snacks
- "Ants on a log" - Spread some peanut butter (almond and cashew butter work as well) on celery and top it with raisins.
- Wrap some lean meat and low fat cheese in a whole grain tortilla. Microwave for 30 seconds.
- Spread some low fat ricotta cheese on whole grain bread or crackers and top with fruit of your choice.
- Trail mix is OK but many brands have more fat and sugar then you may expect. Mixing some granola, dried fruit, nuts and seeds not only gives you control of the fat and sugar but you can also add more of your favorites goodies.
- Spread laughing cow low fat cheese (or other brand) on Wasa or other whole grain crackers. Top it with raisins or other fruit if you like.
- Low fat microwave popcorn. Steve's favorite is Orville Redenbacher Low Fat Kettle Corn. Most hotels have a microwave that guests can use. Don't turn your back on it through because as soon as it stops popping it burns.
- Spread peanut butter on whole grain tortillas and roll them up. These can keep for days if sealed in a plastic bag and you don't use old fashion peanut butter.
- Tuna or salmon in a pouch with whole grain or sesame crackers.
- Some fruit cups and applesauce but not the ones with added sugar often labeled in light or heavy syrup.
